(UnitedVoice.com) – The border crisis is still raging without a solution in sight. Congress failed to pass a bipartisan bill earlier this year that would have implemented stricter policies. Republicans have pivoted and tried to pass smaller bills that focus on deporting violent criminals. When a bill recently came up for a vote to do just that, the majority of Democrats voted against it.
Backing the Blue
On May 15, the US House voted on HR 7343, the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act. The legislation would authorize the deportation of illegal immigrants who attack police officers. It would also create a new category of inadmissibility, meaning migrants who assault law enforcement would not be allowed to remain.
The bill passed by a vote of 265 to 148. Fifty-four Democrats crossed party lines to vote with the GOP, but all of the lawmakers who voted against it were progressive. Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), the majority whip, slammed Democrats after the bill passed.
Fox News Digital reported that he said Democrats “voted to protect violent illegal immigrants over [America’s] brave law enforcement officers.” In doing so, they proved they’re “the most anti-law enforcement party in history.”
Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) sponsored the legislation weeks after a group of migrants attacked New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers in Times Square.
Officers Attacked
Surveillance video shows a group of immigrants and police in a violent brawl on January 27. Officers took a man to the ground outside of a homeless shelter. The video shows several men kicking the cops and trying to pull them off of the man who they had in custody.
Seven migrants were arrested for the beating. Six of the suspects were offered plea deals the day before lawmakers voted on the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act. Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Laura Ward revealed one of the men arrested, 24-year-old Yohenry Brito, was arrested for shoplifting.
Ironically, Republicans are also pushing for a bill related to illegal immigrants who are caught shoplifting. In March, the House passed the Laken Riley Act, which would require migrants arrested for the crime to be held until they’re deported. The bill is a response to the murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley by an illegal who was previously arrested for shoplifting.
The majority of Democrats voted against that bill too. They claimed Republicans were using the nursing student’s murder to score political points. The Democratic-controlled Senate hasn’t brought the bill to the floor for a vote and it’s not clear they will bring the latest one up either.
