(UnitedVoice.com) – Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son, defied a congressional subpoena on December 13. The younger Biden held a press conference on Capitol Hill and said he was there to testify, but he refused to do so behind closed doors. Instead, he said he would only submit to the deposition if Republicans allowed him to testify publicly. Biden accused GOP lawmakers of trying to destroy him for political gain and use his addiction against him to hurt his father.
Republicans are now investigating whether the president obstructed Congress when his son refused to testify.
Obstruction of Congress?
On December 27, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) wrote to White House Counsel Edward Siskel. They demanded all communications between the president and his son or his son’s attorneys regarding his deposition. Comer and Jordan (who has also defied a congressional subpoena) stated the request is in furtherance of their probe into whether to impeach President Biden.
The congressmen pointed to a statement by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on December 13. She told reporters that the president was “familiar” with what Hunter Biden was going to say during his press conference. The press secretary didn’t give any other details, saying the younger Biden was “a private citizen” and telling the press to speak to his representatives.
Jordan and Comer said it’s illegal to “influence, obstruct, or impede” Congress. They said they are now investigating whether President Biden played a role in Hunter Biden’s decision to defy the subpoena.
The congressmen want all communications received or sent by members of the Executive Branch regarding the deposition of Hunter Biden. They also requested all documents and communications sent or received by the administration regarding the president’s statement on December 6 about his family’s business associates.
Response to Congress
The White House has not addressed the request about the press secretary’s statements on December 13. However, the administration has repeatedly denied the allegations against the president and said the impeachment inquiry is nothing more than a political hitjob that the GOP manufactured.
Democrats and at least one Republican have attacked Jordan for going after Hunter Biden for defying a subpoena when the Ohio congressman did the same thing. The Hill reported former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), who served on the January 6th Committee, laughed at Jordan and said, “I mean, the hypocrisy is mind-numbing.”
Jordan and Comer gave the White House until January 10 to comply.
