(UnitedVoice.com) – Linda Frickey, 73, was sitting in her Nissan Kicks SUV in New Orleans on March 21, 2022. She wasn’t bothering anyone, but a group of teens decided they wanted her vehicle. Now she’s dead, and they are all in prison.
On January 12, New Orleans Criminal District Judge Kimya Holmes sentenced 18-year-old John Honore to life in prison. The teen’s sentence was mandatory after being found guilty of murder during a one-day trial in November. His attorney told the jury that he killed Frickey, but blamed it on his bad childhood.
Honore and three girls were indicted on second-degree murder charges for the crime. The other defendants, 16-year-old Mar’Qel Curtis, 16-year-old Lenyra Theophile, and 17-year-old Briniyah Baker, were allowed to plead guilty last November to attempted manslaughter. They were each given 20 years in prison.
According to prosecutors, the teens wanted to steal Frickey’s SUV. They approached her and Honore sprayed the elderly woman with pepper spray, then punched her. When she fell to the pavement, the convicted murderer stomped on her face. The victim was still tangled in the seatbelt, so when Honore jumped into the SUV and started driving, she was dragged across the pavement for approximately 200 yards.
Frickey reportedly begged Honore to let her go. He tried to dislodge her while the car was in motion. He drove over a curb, and a cable from a utility pole severed the victim’s arm from her body. Witness Leanne Mascar testified to the court that she watched it happen and ran to Frickey. She said the victim was face up, awake, and her clothes were ripped off. By the time emergency personnel reached the scene 20 minutes later, Frickey was dead.
Erin O’Sullivan, a forensic pathologist, said the victim suffered the arm injury, and broke her collarbone, vertebrae, and ribs. She also had a head injury and a torn aorta. Honore’s mother identified him as one of the carjackers and said his girlfriend, Theophile, was one of the girls. She told the court that she turned him in because it was the right thing to do.
Frickey’s sister, Jinnylynn Griffin, told reporters that Honore was a “demon” who “deserves to go where he is going.”
