(UnitedVoice.com) – The House has passed a bill designed to protect Border Patrol agents from illegal immigrants. The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act was voted through by a solid majority — but most House Democrats opposed it. The liberal opposition to the bill makes it hard for Dems to claim they’re interested in protecting Americans from foreign criminals.
The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act was introduced to the House last September by Representatives Juan Coscomani (R-AZ) and Monica De La Cruz (R-TX). The Act creates a new offense of “operating a motor vehicle within 100 miles of the U.S. border while fleeing” from Border Patrol or any other law enforcement officer. Anyone found guilty of the offense will be disqualified from claiming asylum in the US and faces deportation. If an agent is killed or seriously injured during a high-speed pursuit, the perpetrator will also face mandatory prison time.
This is a real problem: The act is named in honor of Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez Jr, who died on December 7, 2022, while pursuing a group of illegal immigrants. There’s also an obvious danger to civilians if illegals are driving at high speed in an attempt to avoid law enforcement, so a law that deters this dangerous behavior should easily gain bipartisan support.
Unfortunately, it didn’t. Only 56 House Democrats voted with Republicans to pass the law. Meanwhile, 154 of them, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), voted against it. So far, none of them have gone public with their reasons for opposing the bill, which would only affect immigrants who endanger American lives, but they have been taking fire for it.
Incredibly, Representative Vicente Gonzales (D-TX), who represents the district where Agent Gonzales died in the line of duty, was one Dem who voted against it. National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Delanie Bomar slammed his decision, saying “it takes a special kind of liberal brain rot” to think what these killer migrants are doing is acceptable.
