(UnitedVoice.com) – Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, is one of the most well-known mega-churches in the nation. Televangelist Joel Osteen is the pastor of the congregation. Recently, a suspect opened fire inside the church, and two good guys with guns stopped a tragedy.
On February 11, 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno allegedly walked into Lakewood Church with her 7-year-old son as Spanish-speaking church services began. The Houston Police Department revealed she was wearing a trench coat and a backpack. She pointed an AR-15 at a security guard and forced her way into the church before opening fire.
Two off-duty police officers — one with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the other a Houston officer — were working security at the church at the time of the shooting. They fired back at the suspect. Moreno allegedly told the officers she had a bomb, but a later search disproved that claim. The suspect was killed at the scene.
According to reports, Moreno’s son was shot in the head. He was hospitalized in critical condition, and authorities have not explained how he was shot. The second victim was a man in his 50s who suffered an injury to his hip.
Law enforcement officers found a Palestine sticker on the suspect’s rifle and anti-semitic text written by her.
This isn’t the first time a shooting at a Texas church has been interrupted by a good guy with a gun. In November 2017, Devin Kelley, a former member of the US Air Force, opened fire at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. Sadly, he was able to murder 26 people, including an unborn child, before former firearms instructor Stephen Willeford fired at him from across the street, hitting him twice and causing him to flee. Willeford and another man, Johnnie Langendorff, chased him with law enforcement on the phone, relaying his location. The shooter crashed and then killed himself.
Both shootings are perfect examples of why the Second Amendment is so important.
