(UnitedVoice.com) – Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to a back-to-back Super Bowl win on February 11. The overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers was the third championship win for the team in just five years. Sadly, when the team brought the Lombardi Trophy back home to Kansas City for the victory parade, a mass shooting shattered the event.
On February 14, the Chiefs boarded open-air buses and traveled a parade route through Kansas City, Missouri. The governors of both Kansas and Missouri were in attendance, as were hundreds of thousands of fans from both sides of the state line. Toward the end of the event, gunfire erupted and sent people scrambling.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves held a press briefing and told the media that the shooting injured 22 people and killed one. The deceased victim was identified as Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan, a popular radio DJ who hosted the show “A Taste of Tejano.” She was the mother of two children, one of whom was at the event with her and also suffered a gunshot wound. He survived. Singer Taylor Swift, who is dating the Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce, donated $100,000 to the family of the late DJ.
Graves said the victims of the shooting ranged from ages eight to 47. At least half of them were under the age of 16. All of the injured victims are expected to survive. The police chief revealed three people were taken into custody. One of them was released, but two juveniles remained behind bars at the time of her briefing. The chief also applauded good samaritans who took down someone that they believed was involved in the shooting.
One of those good samaritans, US Navy veteran Tony Janssens, spoke to Fox News about the incident. He said he noticed the people he believed were the shooters trying to get away and alerted an officer. One of them took off running, so he chased them and screamed to those around him to tackle the suspect. Janssens said four men finally listened and took the suspected gunman down.
Law enforcement has not said whether that person was one of the two individuals still in jail.
