(UnitedVoice.com) – More than 35,000 migrants have moved to Chicago since 2022. Most of them have been sent to the city from Texas as part of Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s relocation program. Recently, four illegal immigrants were arrested for allegedly attacking a man.
On February 17, four men who live at a downtown Chicago migrant shelter were arrested. Police charged them with strangling and robbing a 48-year-old man who was riding the Pink Line train.
The Chicago Police Department identified the suspects as 21-year-old Wilker Gutierrez Sierra, 22-year-old Fernando Loyo-Rodriguez, 18-year-old Yonnier Guasamucare Garcia, and 20-year-old Carlos Carreno-Carreno. The migrants are accused of attacking the man at approximately 4:45 p.m. local time while near the Kostner station. The police arrested the suspects less than an hour later at the Pulaski station. Each of them was charged with one felony count of robbery and one felony count of aggravated battery/strangle.
These were not the first migrants arrested by the Chicago Police Department this year. In January, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced law enforcement discovered a retail theft ring involving newly arrived migrants. He explained that criminal organizations used the desperation of the immigrants to carry out retail crimes in exchange for fake driver’s licenses, social security cards, or green cards.
WLS News reported Dart said some of the migrants taken into custody stated that the criminal organizations directed them on what to steal in exchange for documents they needed. The immigrants were mainly directed to take low-cost items. Dart explained that most of the individuals arrested for theft were trying to get identification cards so they could get a job.
The Oak Brook Police Department, a suburb of Chicago, arrested 47 migrants between October and January. Many of them were charged with theft after targeting stores like Macy’s at the village’s mall.
Millions of migrants have entered the US since President Joe Biden took office.
