Governor Vetoes Leftist Gun Agenda

(UnitedVoice.com) – Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) has made a name for himself in the purple state. He’s not afraid to take on the Left. That was on full display recently when he issued 30 vetoes on gun legislation.

March 26, Youngkin announced he’d taken action on 67 bills, including 32 bills related to guns. One of the bills he vetoed was a ban on the manufacture, sale, importation, transfer, or purchase of so-called assault weapons made on or after July 1, 2024. The bill also stated that possession of those weapons by people under the age of 21 would be illegal, and it would have prohibited sales of ammunition-feeding devices holding more than 10 rounds.

Additionally, the governor vetoed a bill that would have implemented a waiting period of five days in the state for those trying to purchase a gun. There’s no waiting period in the state under existing law. He axed another bill that would have established safe storage requirements for people who kept guns in their homes where minors were present.

In a statement, the governor said he “swore an oath to defend the Constitution” of the country and his state, which “includes protecting the right of law-abiding Virginians to keep and bear arms.”

Although he vetoed dozens of bills, Youngkin signed two gun control bills into law. One of the bills would allow law enforcement to charge a parent with a felony if they allow their child to possess or have access to a gun after they were notified their kid could be violent. That bill is known as “Lucia’s Law,” named after 13-year-old Lucia Bremer, who was killed in 2021 by a 14-year-old boy in Henrico County.

The other bill the governor signed would ban the sale, manufacture, or possession of an auto sear. Those are small devices used to turn a semi-automatic gun into an automatic firearm.

Neither of the bills Youngkin signed were opposed by gun groups.
