(UnitedVoice.com) – Ronna Romney McDaniel left her position as Republican National Committee chairwoman in early March. Her party had reelected her this year to another term as the head of the national party, but former President Donald Trump reportedly wanted a change. McDaniel turned in her resignation and rode off into the sunset, only to find herself on the doorstep of NBC News.
That short tenure with the television network is now over. Sources have indicated she might sue.
Hired and Fired
On Friday, March 22, NBC News announced it hired McDaniel to serve as a political commentator on the network. Her contract was reportedly worth approximately $600,000 for two years.
The hiring caused a revolt at NBC and MSNBC. Some of the company’s most popular stars called their bosses out on air. Host Nicolle Wallace took issue with McDaniel’s alleged efforts to overturn the last presidential election. She said that the decision to hire the former RNC chair was a signal to election deniers that they could do that as “a badge-carrying employee of NBC News.” Wallace isn’t a liberal voice, either. She served as the press secretary under former President George W. Bush and worked on John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Rachel Maddow, the company’s highest-paid host, dedicated the first half of her show on March 25 to expressing her disappointment in the network. She also made her outrage over McDaniel’s handling of the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol clear.
After the anger from his employees, NBCUniversal Group Chairman Cesar Conde announced the company was parting ways with McDaniel on Monday, just three days later. He apologized to his employees.
Possible Lawsuit
McDaniel hasn’t commented on the firing. However, various media reports indicate she met with entertainment attorney Bryan Freedman to discuss her options. He has represented Tucker Carlson, Don Lemon, Chris Cuomo, and others in the past.
Hugh Hewitt, a conservative political commentator and friend of McDaniel, claimed she was going to sue everyone she believes defamed her. He claimed he’d “never seen anything this brutal” since he began working in the media more than three decades ago. Hewitt said the network “made a terrible decision” by allowing MSNBC, the political arm, to bleed over, claiming “the cult has taken over the news division.”
According to POLITICO, McDaniel’s team was angry and accused NBC of misleading her into thinking she would be welcomed. They were also reportedly mad that “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker told her viewers she had nothing to do with her hiring. A source claimed Welker met with her weeks before, insinuating she was part of contract negotiations. An NBC insider denied the claims.
