(UnitedVoice.com) – A documentary was released on HBO Max in April, detailing the massacre of a group of Mormon women and children, including babies, in Mexico in 2019. The victims were all shot and burned to death in their vehicles as they traveled to a family wedding in another city. Police later revealed members of a drug cartel mistakenly killed the families.
The deaths were added to the hundreds of thousands of people who have died at the hands of the Mexican drug cartels. Even though guns, drugs, and crime have made many parts of Mexico unlivable, the country’s president praised cartel leaders recently.
Respectful Cartels
On April 25, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) held a morning press briefing. A reporter asked him about his recent trip to Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s hometown. The journalist wanted to know if the cartels behaved on his trip to the area.
AMLO responded with enthusiasm, saying, “Always!” He claimed that sometimes his team came upon strange people, but they’re “respectful. The Mexican president went on to say that the murders and attacks that have happened in Mexico “generally occur between” cartel members of different groups, and “They respect the citizenry.”
The remarks came approximately a week after AMLO said he wasn’t going to fight the cartels just because the US wants him to.
Past Remarks
According to Fox News, the Mexican president has blamed cartel violence on a lack of opportunities in the past and called on the government to address root causes. He has reportedly said, “You cannot fight violence with violence.” Additionally, he developed a “hugs, not bullets” strategy to keep young men out of the cartels.
AMLO has also told Mexican citizens that they should negotiate peace pacts with cartels to prevent themselves or their families from being murdered. His frequent visits to El Chapo’s hometown have also created controversy.
Violence Upends Mexico
While AMLO might be gaslighting his citizens into thinking the cartels are just respectful citizens who only want to brutally murder other cartel members, that’s just not the case.
In addition to the Mormons, other Americans have also lost their lives. In 2023, Zindell Brown and Shaeed Woodard died when they traveled to Mexico with LaTavia Washington McGee and Eric Williams so that Washington McGee could have surgery. When they crossed into the country, they were shot at and kidnapped by cartel members.
In February of this year, an American woman died after being shot during a gunfight at a Mexican resort. Mexico was also named the most dangerous country for journalists in 2022. There are also thousands of kidnappings in the country every year.
In other words, there’s nothing “respectful” about the cartels.
