Former Peruvian President Sentenced in Landmark Corruption Case

Alejandro Toledo, who served as Peru’s president from 2001 to 2006, has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for his role in a widespread corruption scandal. The National Superior Court of Specialized Criminal Justice in Lima found Toledo guilty of accepting $35 million in bribes from Odebrecht, a Brazilian construction giant, in exchange for lucrative government contracts.

The case centers on a significant highway project linking Brazil with southern Peru, which was notably over budget. Toledo’s conviction is part of a larger investigation into the Odebrecht scandal, which has implicated numerous high-ranking officials across Latin America.
