(UnitedVoice.com) – Democrats were accused of “anointing” Hillary Clinton in 2016. The allegations contributed to her electoral loss in the battleground states. Now, the party is being accused of not learning from its mistakes.
On July 23, the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation issued a statement informing the Democratic National Committee (DNC) that it wants them to host a primary virtually before the August convention. They called for the party’s Rules Committee to come up with a new process that would allow the American people to pick the new nominee.
The group argued what’s happening is “unprecedented” and called for the DNC to ensure democracy and Black voters are protected. BLM went on to say that President Joe Biden wasn’t the candidate they wanted, but now they can’t ignore what’s happening in the party.
The statement accused the DNC of refusing to host primary debates, which would have allowed Americans to see Biden’s decline last year. They also made it nearly impossible for anyone to run against him for the nomination by changing the primary rules and schedule. Finally, the organization accused the party elites of bullying Biden out of the race.
BLM claimed those same people are now trying to “manipulate black voters by anointing [Vice President] Kamala Harris” without a primary vote. “This blatant disregard for democratic principles is unacceptable,” the statement said. The group stated that it had no clue where Harris stood on important issues or what her future vice president’s record was because they hadn’t been named.
The progressive organization’s statement accused the Democratic Party of failing the black community by taking it for granted. It said it would support the excitement that many black people feel about Harris potentially becoming the nominee and intended to continue calling out the damaging process under which party leaders chose her.
Harris is not the official nominee. Although she has allegedly gained the support of all the delegates she needs to win the nomination, someone else could still be chosen at the convention, which kicks off on August 19.
