GOP Calls for Retaliation After US Troops Killed

(UnitedVoice.com) – Republicans see Iran as the biggest threat in the Middle East. For more than a decade, members of the GOP have called for the US to take action against the country. Now, they are calling for an all-out war with Tehran.

On January 28, militants attacked a base housing US troops in Jordan, on the border of Syria. The drone killed three Army Reserve soldiers and injured more than 40 other service members. According to the Department of Defense, the strike hit near the barracks early in the morning, which is why there were so many troops in the area.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called on President Joe Biden to “strike targets of significance inside Iran.” Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) said the administration needs to “Target Tehran.”

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) said the president’s “appeasement of Iran must end,” and called on him to take “clear and decisive action” against the country and hold it “accountable for the malign activities of its proxies.”

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) said there’s a need for “devastating military retaliation against Iran’s terrorist forces, both in Iran and across the Middle East.” He said that if the president does anything less, it makes him a “coward.”

The Biden Administration has vowed retaliation against those responsible for the murders of the soldiers. The president blamed Iranian-backed militants. However, the Defense Department is still investigating where exactly the deadly drone came from, which could take some time.

The administration also wants to ensure its response is a show of force, but also doesn’t lead to a wider regional conflict. The danger of a broader conflict is a real and persistent one since Hamas launched the deadly October 7 terrorist attack on Israel that killed approximately 1,200 people. Iranian-backed militias are becoming a dangerous problem for the US and its allies.
