(UnitedVoice.com) – Although not the official candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris is presumably running for president now that Joe Biden has dropped out of the race. Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, have thrown their support behind her. Republicans are now going after Biden and Harris over their border policies.
On July 25, House Republicans voted on a symbolic resolution to condemn Harris’ job performance when it comes to the US border. Six Democrats joined all of the House Republicans to condemn the vice president. Those Democrats were Reps. Henry Cuellar (TX), Yadira Caraveo (CO), Jared Golden (ME), Don Davis (NC), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA), and Mary Pelota (AK). They are all from districts that could easily swing to the GOP in the next election.
The resolution called for “elected officials who understand” how serious the border problem is and “who will execute the policies to fix the border crisis.”
Rep. Caraveo has endorsed Harris in the presidential race. The congresswoman told the press that she is an “independent voice” who won’t bow down to the party if she feels they are wrong.
Biden tasked Harris with figuring out and combatting the root causes of immigration. During her time in office, she has held meetings with leaders in the Northern Triangle countries in Central America. The US has heavily invested in the nations to help boost their economies and create opportunities for would-be migrants in their own countries.
While the administration has remained close to those nations, migration has exploded from places like Haiti and China. Republicans don’t believe Harris has done enough to stop the flow of migrants into the US, which has overwhelmed communities and drained resources.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) said Harris’s “inaction” has led to “record high illegal crossings, overwhelmed communities, and an evisceration of the rule of law.”
Former President Donald Trump has started to highlight Harris’s border failures in the presidential race. It remains to be seen if that will make a difference in November.
