Tim Scott Begins Campaign Blitz to Secure Trump’s VP Spot

(UnitedVoice.com) – Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) has become an important figure in the GOP over the last few years. As the only black Republican senator, he has faced off against Democrats in battles related to police reform and other issues critical to his community. He’s also hoping to secure a spot as former President Donald Trump’s running mate.

On June 6, the Great Opportunity PAC, a super PAC affiliated with the South Carolina senator, launched a $14 million campaign. The organization is targeting black and Latino voters, hoping to move them away from Biden and toward Trump’s camp. The PAC intends to target the voters in key swing states — Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Nevada — where the former president is currently beating President Joe Biden.

Scott spoke to reporters and said he thinks there is a “seed in the soil that’s been germinating” when it comes to minority voters, particularly men, shifting away from the Democratic Party. The senator will tour the states he’s targeting and host small events to make direct appeals to voters. He plans to tout Trump’s policies as president, like the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and forgiving debts at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The senator claimed he expected to see a “racial shift that we haven’t seen in probably three decades of politics.”

Political pundits view Scott’s outreach as an effort to become Trump’s vice presidential pick. The former president has repeatedly named the senator as one of the people on his shortlist. Scott has attended numerous rallies and spoken up for his former opponent. Trump has said the lawmaker is a much better spokesman for him than he was for himself when he tried to secure the GOP nomination.

The Republican party will hold its National Convention on the weekend of July 15. Trump will likely name his running mate choice closer to the convention.
