(UnitedVoice.com) – The White House has apologized to a Republican presidential hopeful after the Democratic National Committee (DNC) joked about his withdrawal from the contest. Asa Hutchinson, a former governor of Arkansas, suspended his campaign after the Iowa caucuses. Senior DNC officials mocked his low profile — but their cruel humor was too much even for President Joe Biden.
On January 15, Iowa Republicans took the first step towards selecting former President Donald Trump as their party’s nominee for November’s general election. Trump was the clear winner, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley. Hutchinson, a former congressman who served as Governor of Arkansas from 2015 until last January, came last with just 191 votes out of over 110,000 that were cast. After the disappointing result, he said he’d “reassess” his campaign; the next day, he announced, not surprisingly, that he had decided to suspend it.
Hutchinson was never likely to win the nomination, but instead of giving him credit for trying, senior Liberals decided to mock him instead. After he announced the suspension of his campaign, DNC press secretary Sarafina Chitika said on social media, “This news comes as a shock to those of us who could’ve sworn he had already dropped out.” It was a spiteful dig at a campaign that, inevitably, was overshadowed by Trump and his two serious rivals.
On January 17, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Jeff Zients, the White House chief of staff, had called Hutchinson to pass on President Biden’s apologies for the incident. She added that Biden “has deep respect” for Hutchinson and admired his campaign. Hutchinson graciously replied that the call was “not necessary but still appreciated.” He went on to condemn the extreme partisanship that’s taken over US politics, pointing out that you can disagree with someone without demonizing them. That’s a lesson many of our politicians seem to have forgotten.
